Mallard Grange is a working farm located on the outskirt of Ripon, North Yorkshire.
The 700-year-old farmhouse is a special place, packed with character and charm and has been home to the Johnson Family since 1933.
The farm itself is run by Charles and son James, who have recently adopted regenerative and nature friendly techniques, to farm more sustainably.
Wheat, barley, beans and oil seed rape are grown coupled with approximately 140 Hereford/Angus cross suckler cows and calves, a flock of 400 breeding ewes and 230 free range hens.
Maggie has run a Bed & Breakfast business at Mallard Grange for over 30 years. Together with son James, this has evolved into self-catering with Mallard Grange Escapes, offering guests their own quiet little corner of the farm to enjoy.
Since 2018, we have been on a journey to change the way we farm, introducing new methods to reduce environmental impact and secure the future of our family business.
We have implemented 5 key principles of regenerative agriculture to improve soil health and support a healthy eco-system.
Limiting soil disturbance
Changing from ploughing fields to direct drilling.
Maintaining armour on the soil surface
Growing cover crops to protect the soil over the cold winter months.
Building diversity
Planting a range of seeds within a field, rather than just one variety.
Keeping living roots in the soil
Companion crops grown together.
Integrating livestock
Farmed correctly, cattle and sheep play an integral part in soil health and can aid carbon capture.
These principles will not just allow us to sequester more carbon, improve natural habitats but also increase the nutrient density of the foods we produce.
